From the Desk of a Citizen
Dear Mr. President,
First, I congratulate you on your re-election. I applaud anyone who can go through the vigorous campaigning schedule while trying to act as the President at the same time.
I would like you to know and understand that I am a loyal and patriotic citizen of this country. I have always loved America, and the values it has been built on. From a young age, I learned about our founding fathers and the struggle that they went through to build and bring this nation together. I was so proud of that heritage that I continued to learn about our nation's history throughout my schooling and am now studying it at a university level. The creation of this nation was by no accident or coincidence. It was created to be a beacon in this world and stand as a symbol of freedom, hope, and opportunity. I still believe in that today.
Now, you may as well know right now that I did not vote for you. My reasons for this are my own as a voting citizen. I wanted something different. But, the decision has been made. And because I respect the office of the President and what he should stand for, I will continue to support you in all that I can.
As the man that is supposed to be representing the people, not just democrats and not just republicans, I have a few favors to ask of you for these next four years. Please consider them.
First, take a look at the American public as a whole. The majority is not staunch democrat or republican. In fact, the American public is mainly moderate. People land closer to the middle then they do on the opposing ends. That being said, in your decision making and policies, please keep in mind that this country needs moderation, not just democrat or republican views. Balance. That's what this government system was built on. Don't waste time arguing for things that are not going to help a majority of the people.
Second, don't lie to me. Past presidents, both democrat and republicans, have played that card and I'm down right sick of it. Don't tell me you are going to fix this economy when really it's just getting worse. We can all see it. Be positive, not deceitful. I want a president that I can trust and feel has the heart of America on his mind and truly wants to see us succeed. Not someone who just wants to get his bills passed because that's the only sign of a successful president. I think of the FDR and how he united this country in a time of extreme misery. People felt close to the president. They depended on him, and he knew that. He knew that he needed to be the light for the people who were all sitting in the dark. He didn't waste time having parties once he was elected. He got right down to business and put plans into action that relieved the public. America needs that kind of unity now. It needs a president who they can look, listen, and trust in.
Third and finally, I want you to take a second and just think about the situations that various types of Americans are in. Not just the middle class, but the homeless, the jobless, the wealthy, and the students. I realize it is impossible to make every single one of them happy and satisfied, but if you could do your best to at least try and sympathize with those of us who don't have an oval office. We're the ones running this country. We're the ones that you are representing. I don't care what you did as a child, or that you had tough times, or what grades you got. I care about what you are going to do right now to make everyone believe in America again. As a college student, I can tell you right now, none of us are looking forward to having to run the country in the state that it's in. Convince me that there's hope for the future of this great country and that we won't go down like the rest of the world is.
I realize that I don't understand what goes on behind those closed doors of your office. I don't know what it's like to have to be a world leader, keeping foreigners happy and keeping relations on good terms. I don't know what it's like to argue with Congress or to speak to the press day in and day out. And it can't be easy having the media down your back everyday. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. But I DO know that this country is capable of so much more then it is doing, and that it's people need help not higher gas prices or more taxes or bills. It needs those values that the founding fathers intended it to have. It needs leaders who aren't so busy arguing so much, but busy trying to work together and help this country out of the hole that continues to grow larger. That's all I truly want.
With that, I will continue to pray that you can find success and that you will know what this country really needs.
Good luck,
A faithful, hopefully, and loyal citizen of the United States of America
